NORFOLK – Northeast Community College golf closed their fall season with the rain-shortened Nebraska Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at the Norfolk Country Club here Saturday. The Hawks finished the one-day tournament, originally scheduled for two days, in thirteenth with a team total of 339.
The University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK) took first place with a team total of 299. Bellevue University claimed second with 302, and Hastings College totaled 304 for third place.
Jay Cottam and Riley Williams, both of UNK, and Midland University’s Hunter Giesselmann tied for medalist honors, each firing a 70 (-2).
Mason Stubbs led the Hawks with an 81 (+9), while Capp Bengston, Cabe DeBower and Brook Klinetobe each finished with an 86 (+14). Andrew Schnoor ended the day with a 90 (+18).
Northeast Coach Kurt Pytleski said the demands of schoolwork as well as rainy weather this week created a challenge for his team.
“I think my young guys are still trying to balance school, golf and everything else that goes with college life, and golf will sometimes take a back seat to school. I let the team off of practice for four days between the last tournament we played, and this one to catch up on schoolwork, and then we got the rain this week and could not practice. It backfired on us, which was evident by the scores we turned in today, but school comes first.”
Pytleski said his team has work to do during the off season.
“My golfers will work out hard this winter, work on their games a little, and we will find a nice team this spring.”
